Weekly Updates

9/13

THIS WEEK IN SECOND GRADE:

Math: We are identifying place value of 3 digit numbers: ones, tens and hundreds. Students will be able to describe what place a number is in and write it in expanded form. This will continue into next week. We are demonstrating many ways to make 10. We are reviewing time. A fun way to review the many ways to make 10 at home is Playing Go Fish Make Ten or War Make 10 with a set of playing cards.

Performance Series Test in Math Wednesday.

Language Arts: We are moving along in our chapter book read aloud, Charlotte’s Web. We are enjoying other stories such as The Story of Ferdinand by Alex Munro which will be in movie theater’s soon. I can’t wait!

We are reading leveled passages and books for guided reading and covering various strategies for reading for meaning and comprehension. Ask your child about the passage this week and how we checked our comprehension question answers by highlighting them in the text.

Hint for your child: The passage talked about seeing things from a different perspective.

As we read, we will always be encouraging students to use strategies for making sense. Trying a new word, or tricky word is encouraged (sound it out, look for parts you know, try it) and asking “Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?” to be sure we are reading for meaning.

Social Studies: We will discuss and examine traits of a good citizen of our country. We will be comparing what good citizenship in schools and in our communities looks like. Review of National Symbols has been a part of discussion and we had fun participating in a Kahoot in class to review! Ask your child about this!

Religion: Students will describe what apostles and disciples are as well as learn about people trusting God and having faith. We also discover why Jesus was nailed to a cross. Mrs. Wallin has asked that we reinforce reverence during prayers, so this will be discussed and practiced.

Friendly Reminder to please turn in Title 1 Forms as Mrs. Sachelben will begin meeting groups next week for Reading and Math.

Also, please join us for Mass tomorrow at 10:30 if you can. We’d love to have you! If you do come, don’t mind me, I tend to get teary when kids are singing and praising the Lord. It just gets me in the feels all the time! Our chorus is awesome!
