Base is where you will live, eat, and play during your time on the program. It is communal living at its finest! Some call it rustic, others call it home. Take a look below to understand what you can expect from our base in North Carolina. To ensure you are best prepared you can also take a look at our packing list here.
Sleeping Arrangements: We offer free accommodation for all residential volunteers. You can expect to be placed in a room with up to 5 others in co-ed rooms with bunk beds. The sleeping rooms will have a shared restroom in each equipped with one toilet and shower. Remember, this is communal living, and space can get cozy! Real mattresses are provided for all volunteers, but you will need all your sleeping gear, including sleeping bag or blankets and pillows.
There is a chance that volunteers will leave sleeping gear behind, so you can check with the Volunteer Relations Coordinator before you arrive. Please also make sure you reach out to the Volunteer Relations Coordinator if have any specific requests for sleeping arrangements.
Kitchen and dining area
Kitchen facilities: The kitchen at our base is equipped with basic cooking equipment such as pots, frying pans, basic utensils, cutlery, plates, cups, glasses, etc. It will be available for you to use in the morning so that you can prepare your breakfast. You can also use it on your days off and in the evening if you wish to prepare your own dinner instead of the one provided.
We have a designated storage space where you can keep your food, but we ask that all food be stored in sealed containers. We highly recommend bringing a sharpie/marker to mark your items.
We have a communal fridge, which can be used for personal food. However, the space is very limited, so you should anticipate bringing only needed items to be stored at a low temperature.
Communal space: We have common spaces at the base where you will be able to spend time with other volunteers, attend daily meetings, eat your meals, and participate in events. We commonly gather for movie nights, arts and crafts, games and fundraising events!
Laundry: We have a washer and dryer available on base, which can be also used for personal laundry. However, AHAH items such as work t-shirts will have a priority.
Base Activities and Amenities: Not only is it simply a beautiful property, there are many fun amenities available for free use to our volunteers. So there is always something fun to do!
You will find activities such as a lakeside walking trail, gym, volleyball, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts and on site restaurant and coffee cafe.
Welcome to North Carolina base! This video will give you a better idea of what to expect from our facilities.
Volunteers should come prepared with a SIM card and anything needed to stay connected. Our facilities have guest WIFI available for you to connect to. However, it is not always the most reliable around the base. There should be cell coverage through major providers in most areas.
There are also plugs in rooms to charge devices. We still do recommend bringing a solar charging device or power bank for your cell phones and electronics.
We provide three meals a day for our volunteers on all of our working days. There will be no meals provided on your days off - Saturdays and Sundays. You can eat out or purchase ingredients at the grocery store to make meals at the base. Basic food items will be available for you to prepare your own breakfasts and lunches on work days.
Breakfast: Oats, Peanut Butter, Jam, Bread, Eggs, Tea and Coffee
Lunch: Leftovers from the night before or packed sandwiches/salad.
Dinner: A hot meal made by a volunteer or staff member
Vegetarian diets can be accommodated but vegans and those with specific dietary requirements will need to supplement what we can provide with items they bring or source and purchase themselves. If you have any food allergies, please inform the Volunteer Relations Coordinator prior to arrival.
