ALEX partners with AMSTI and ATiM to host the Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) events. GEMS is an educational program designed to actively involve girls in STEM-related activities through formal and informal learning environments. The GEMS program supports the national need to close the STEM gender gap by utilizing eight teaching strategies to encourage self-confidence and elevate interest in the areas of math and science among female students. GEMS teacher practices focus on these strategies to strengthen girls' beliefs regarding their abilities in science and math.
Congratulations to the 2026 GEMS Teams! Thank you for your support of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) program. This year, we have 72 teams selected to attend, with a total count of 515 girls!
The 2026 GEMS Expo celebrated 18 years of inspiring girls to explore STEM!
This year, the Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) Expo brought together 515 students and 78 educators across three Alabama locations, Birmingham, Jacksonville, and Huntsville, for a day of discovery, creativity, and innovation.
Participants experienced engaging keynote speakers, hands-on STEM activities, and exciting team projects designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in science, technology, engineering, and math. From rocket launches to electrical engineering challenges, GEMS teams explored real-world STEM concepts while learning from inspiring women working in STEM fields who shared their stories, expertise, and encouragement.
The continued growth of the GEMS Expo highlights its powerful impact in encouraging young women to see themselves as future STEM leaders while supporting educators who help guide them along the way.
A special thank you to our partners and supporters: ALEX, ALSDE Educational Technology, ATiM, and AMSTI for helping make these events possible.
We’re proud of the incredible energy and innovation displayed at the 2026 GEMS Expos, and we look forward to even more opportunities to empower girls in STEM in the years ahead!
