Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) is an educational program offered by the Alabama State Department of Education, through the Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX).  The GEMS educational program supports the national need to close the STEM gender gap by utilizing eight teaching strategies to encourage self-confidence and elevate interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math with female students. GEMS teacher practices focus on these strategies to strengthen girls’ beliefs regarding their abilities in math and science. The GEMS-U program is committed to changing confidence levels, pedagogy, and curriculum for girls and educators in all disciplines by providing opportunities to extend learning beyond the four walls of the traditional classroom.

GEMS activities and curriculum resources are available through ALEX for all educators, students, and parents at https://alex.state.al.us
