Capstone Lesson for What is Machine Learning? (Grades 6-8)

Lesson Plan for What is Machine Learning?

Summary Statement

This lesson aims to introduce middle school students (grades 6-8) to the concept of machine learning for AI. It aligns with ISTE standards for students by encouraging creativity(1.6.c), innovative design(1.4.c and 1.4.a), and knowledge construction(1.3.c) through a hands-on activity. This lesson also meets TEKS learning standards for Computer Science(211.C.1.A; 211.C.6) and science(1.1A; 1.3B; 2.4A) as well. Students will collect and label data, train a simple machine learning model to categorize the candy, and evaluate its success. Artifacts like candy, index cards, and an online site will be used to simulate the machine learning process in a fun and engaging way. These artifacts make the abstract concept of machine learning more relatable and allow students to actively participate in the learning experience, hopefully helping them grasp the core ideas of data, training, and testing in machine learning.

Capstone Lesson for U.S. History with Generative AI (Grades 9-12)

Lesson Plan for U.S. History Generative AI

Summary Statement

This lesson introduces high school students (9-12) to generative AI with a U.S. History focus. Students will engage with a Genially to learn about Generative AI and then be tasked with using generative AI to complete a project. Students will have the option to work alone or with up to two people to pick a historical event or person covered this year and create a video for it using generative AI: students will use AI to create song lyrics about their topic and copy the lyrics into Suno AI to turn those lyrics into an actual song of their choice. Students will also use generative AI to create images related to their topic and then upload the song and images to WeVideo to create a video. This aligns with Texas 11th Grade U.S. History TEKS 11.1A, as well as the following ISTE standards: 1.4a and 1.4b (Innovative Designer), 1.6a, 1.6b, 1.6c, 1.6d (Creative Communicator).
