TRIO programs fill a void in Alaska and are necessary for the advancement of postsecondary access for first generation, low income, and students experiencing a disability in our state. While financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO programs help students overcome the class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education through a variety of services. TRIO works and needs your support.
What is TRIO?
TRIO is a set of federally funded educational opportunity programs that motivate and support students from low-income backgrounds, from families in which neither parent has earned a college degree (First Gen), and for students who experience a disability. TRIO provides academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary to promote college access, retention, and graduation.
TRIO Educational Talent Search
The TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program identifies and assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling while encouraging its students to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete postsecondary education. The goal of Educational Talent Search is to increase the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.
TRIO Upward Bound
The TRIO Upward Bound (UB) program provides fundamental support to students in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for students to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which students complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
TRIO Student Support Services
Students following the TRIO pipeline of programs would transition from ETS/UB in high school to TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) at the University level. SSS provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and supports them towards the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants.
