Process

Schaible Fellowships – Recruitment and selection process:

1.     The Geophysical Institute will advertise the opportunity to apply for a Schaible Fellowship on the GI website. The website link will be shared broadly to help advertise this opportunity to attract talented prospective students.

2.     Deadline for prospective students (with faculty mentor supporting letter) to apply (Jan 15th): The application process will involve regular application through the UAF admissions process, in their discipline/department of choice. Prospective students also will submit a separate application to be considered for a Schaible Fellowship in addition to the standard graduate school application. Faculty mentor submits supporting letter by this deadline.

3.     Early to mid-January: GI Director and Associate Director review applications and distribute to faculty review committee. The faculty review committee will consist of one faculty representative from each of the 7 research groups in the GI. Decisions will be made no later than the first week of February.

4.     Faculty review committee will rank applicants such that the top (1 or 2) are offered funding first, with the second tier (3 and/or 4) identified as qualified for funding in case the first offers to prospective students are not accepted. Criteria for ranking the applications will be included in a separate document.

5.     Director makes final decision about who will receive fellowships. Decision is forwarded to the Chancellor for approval (as per the gift agreement).

6.     Once approved by the GI Director and Chancellor, the GI Associate Director will inform the relevant academic department graduate student selection committees of the awardees for expedited acceptance to the PhD program.

7.     In the case that an offer is declined by the prospective student, Fellowships should be made to the second-tier candidates as soon as possible, after GI Director and Chancellor approval.

8.     Fellowship funds may be awarded for the first and second years of the student’s PhD program. Alternatively, if the student has secured TA funds for the first year, the fellowship may be applied to the second and third years of their program. If there are fellowship funds that will not be used, the GI Director will decide how to distribute those funds, in accordance with the gift agreement.
