Evaluation Criteria

Criteria for evaluating Schaible fellowships by the GI faculty review committee:

1) Academic promise of the student, demonstrated in the graduate school application. Please evaluate the following: GPA; Strength of the Letters of Recommendation; Achievements and activities apart from academics (employment, military service, etc)

2) Evaluate the strength of the written research plan. Is the plan well-organized, clear, with excellent broader impacts to society/AK? Is there a high chance for successful graduation within the standard 4 to 5 year PhD program?

3) What is the strategic value of the research to the Geophysical Institute, UAF, and Alaska? Will the research help advance the primary discipline? Is the research innovative or novel?

4) What is the financial need of the faculty mentor? For example, will a Schaible Fellowship help the faculty member succeed in landing new grant funding, or will it help the mentor start a new line of research that serves the GI well?

5) How will the applicant help with GI DEI efforts?

6) Does this applicant help increase numbers of PhD students at the GI and UAF?
