Schaible Fellowships

Welcome

Since 1949, the Geophysical Institute at UAF has been the home of vibrant research activities that serve not only Alaska and the US but are recognized internationally for excellence. GI research is concentrated into 7 research disciplines: Space Physics and Aeronomy; Snow, Ice, and Permafrost; Volcanology; Seismology and Geodesy; Remote Sensing; Tectonics and Sedimentation; and Atmospheric Sciences. Geophysical Institute research includes operational programs that directly contribute to research, hazard assessment, and monitoring in service to the State of Alaska, including the Alaska Volcano Observatory and the Alaska Earthquake Center.

Graduate students are a vital and integral part of the GI research enterprise. The excellence, high visibility, and productivity of GI research is made possible because of the hard work and dedication of our graduate students. Our students will become the next generation of talented researchers, mentors, and teachers, and will continue the excellent reputation held by UAF and the GI in STEM graduate programs.

Grace Berg Schaible’s many contributions to Alaska include generous philanthropy to the University. Grace established a fund through the UA Foundation to support the Schaible Fellowships for students engaged in study or research at the Geophysical Institute, mentored by GI faculty. The Schaible Fellowships will provide opportunities for first or second year PhD students to compete for a fellowship that will cover up to two full years of support for their graduate program.

About Grace Schaible

The Geophysical Institute is pleased to offer Schaible Fellowships to support PhD students mentored by GI faculty, in honor of Grace and her husband Dr. Arthur Schaible. The Schaible Fellowships will be offered to students “whose principal course of study is in subjects taught or researched at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.”1

Grace had deep connections to the University of Alaska, receiving her degree in history in 1949. She then completed a master’s degree at George Washington University before receiving her law degree from Yale in 1958.

Grace held a number of distinguished positions in the state of Alaska, including serving as attorney general, appointed in 1987 by Governor Steve Cowper, and was appointed to serve as a university regent in 19852.

Grace was a strong supporter of the University of Alaska, creating endowed scholarships, helping raise funding for the Museum of the North, and establishing the Schaible Fellowships for GI graduate students. In 2017, Grace was named a “Philanthropist of the Century” by the university2.
