BIG congratulations to Christian Bolton!! Christian was named runner-up for the CNSM Dean's Choice Award at Undergraduate Research Day for his study of how hypoxia affects the blood osmolarity of Antarctic fishes AND he was named the Outstanding Biology and Wildlife Undergraduate Student !!! Way to go, Christian!

We welcomed undergraduate Jessica Gimarc to the lab this semester.  Jessica is quantifying changes in gene expression in stickleback and is supported by URSA.

Michelle Johannsen successfully defended her thesis on October 17, 2023! Congratulations Dr. Johannsen!

Gus Snyder presented his interesting data on changes in mitochondrial function in response to hypoxia in Antarctic notothenioid fishes at the 2023 AK INBRE Retreat in Talkeetna, AK.

Thanks to everyone in our field team for their hard work during our 2023 field season in Antarctic: Dr. Yangfan Zhang, Gus Snyder, Noelle Picard, Danae Paredes, and Christian Bolton. We learned a lot about the hypoxia tolerance of Antarctic notothenioid fishes with more to come as we begin analyzing the samples we shipped home.

Congratulations to Christian Bolton, BLaST Scientist of the Month!

Go Team Stickleback & Rabbit !!! Our lab group was well represented at Ski Mass today. Congratulations to everyone!

Last night, September 15, 2022, members of the Teen Science Cafe and Amy Moran, kicked off the Antarctic Women in Science Project at the Aquarium of the Pacific, providing a fascinating presentation on Pycnogonida. WOW! I was blown away by the students' work.  Amy's research and story of her journey to becoming a scientist were truly inspiring.  What a great evening! Join the students and Maggie Amsler on October 20, 2022 at 6 pm PT  for the next scintillating seminar

Hurray for Team Pipette Tips! We raked in several awards at this year's Ski Mass event, including the Satin Tushes (best team costumes), Director's Team Award (team with the smallest differential for the two laps skied), and Macho Award (fastest male skier to Nanook skier, Patrick Marbacher).

Congratulations to Eleanor-Randell-Green for winning the CNSM Dean's Choice Award for her presentation on anaerobic metabolic remodeling in threespine stickleback!

Attending the SACNAS Conference October 25-29, 2021?  I'll be there!  Please stop by and visit our UA virtual booth.

July 15, 2021: Jordan and Taylor graduate from RAHI! Congratulations!! Good luck to Taylor as she enters her freshman year at the University of Alaska Southeast and to Jordan as she enters her senior year at Mt. Edgecombe High School. Thank you for an amazing six weeks and all that you taught us!

June, 2021

Jordan David & Taylor Vantrease, two students with the Rural Alaska Honors Institute, join the lab to study the effects of temperature on metabolic rate of stickleback.

May, 2021

We're vaccinated! Just in time to celebrate the end of the semester!
