Mātai Whetū Kohanga Reo
Our marae is warm, intimate and welcoming. Mātai Whetū prides itself in the ability to be hospitable and show manaakitanga. The tūpuna whare is carved articulately with beautiful stories and messages in its pou whakairo.
The wharenui Te Rama o Hauraki can sleep roughly 60 - 80 people. We are grateful of the kohanga reo o Mātai Whetū if the number of visitors exceeds the capacity of the whare we our manuwhiri and whanau can also sleep.
The wharekai Waiora can seat and cater to 100 - 150 people. If there is a need for more space our Marae puts up marquee behind the whare kai. The state of the kitchen and abolution block needs improvement. There are plans in place for successful funding and rennovation. Currently there are 2 showers and toilets in both the tāne and wāhine whare paku. Our carpark can hold up to a 100 or so cars.
The maintenence, care and renovation of the marae is upheld by the whānau, ahi kā and individuals. We are in the process of re establishing a marae committee to apply for greater funding to ensure the buildings are fit for purpose for future use.
Te Totara Urupā is 3.5km off Ngāti Maru Highway on Te Arapipi Road. 5 minutes by car from the marae.
