What is the aim of this research?
The aim of this research is to reconnect our whānau toour Haurakitanga by providing information relating to our marae Mātai Whetū and our hapū Ngāti Te Aute.
Which hapū are you researching? Where is this hapū located?
Ngāti Te Aute is our hapū located near Kōpū, in Kirikiri Thames.
What is your relationship to this hapū?
We are descendants Ngāti Te Aute through our tūpuna ancestor Marutūāhu and his eldest son Tamatepō. His descendant Poutangi married Te Aute, a chieftaness of Te Arawa. Therefore the hapū was named Ngāti Te Aute.

The marae being researched is our Principal Marae Mātai Whetū. Mātai Whetū Marae is located in Kōpū near Parawai (Thames) in Hauraki.

Ngāti Te Aute belongs to the Iwi of Ngāti Maru, also known as Maru Iwi and as Ngāti Marutūāhu.
