The Nurses Office is happy to assist students who need medication at school, and for safety reasons ask for the utmost compliance and cooperation regarding medications to be given at school. These will need to be brought in to the school clinic by the parent, guardian or designated adult. Clear guidelines must accompany the medications as to doses and times of administration.
Medications must be:
In the original, properly labeled container (no baggies or envelopes, please!).
Up to date (check expiration date before bringing it to school)
Age appropriate in dosage.
Injectable Medications:
May only be given at school for life-threatening/urgent conditions (for example epinephrine for severe allergic reaction or insulin for diabetes management).
Must have parent/physician authorization on file.
“Controlled Medications”:
Ritalin, Dexedrine and Adderall and all other “controlled” medications must be brought to the clinic by a parent, guardian or responsible adult. Please do not send these medications to school with your child because of modern safety concerns. All controlled medications are counted by the school nurse and locked in a secure cabinet.
Self Medication:
High school students will be permitted to carry a nonprescription remedy (such as a one day dose of Tylenol, Aleve or Midol, etc.) and only when accompanied by written parent permission.
Asthma Inhalers:
“Rescue” inhalers for asthma (such as Albuterol/Ventolin) may be carried by older, responsible students who have parent consent in writing. For younger children, please consult the nurse.
Aspirin Products:
The nurse may not administer aspirin or any aspirin-containing product without written physician consent for students who are 18 and under.
Special Reminder: For reasons of safety, parents, guardians or other designated adults, will need to bring medications to school. A parent, guardian or other responsible adult will also need to pick these up at the end of the school year.
The following immunizations are either required by the school, or recommended/optional:
Required: Polio, Hib (for play-school and preschool only), Measles (2 doses required), and DTaP (Diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis). Please provide all DTaP and measles shot dates.
