Middle School Ramadan Schedule/Arabic Exams Update: April 10th 2021
10 April 2021
Dear Middle School Parents and Students;
The recent announcement from the ministry will have some impact on our current schedule. Starting on Sunday, April 11th, the following will go into effect for the Middle School:
Middle School Students
Cohort A will attend physically on Sundays and Mondays, online learning Wednesdays and Thursdays
Cohort B will attend physically on Wednesdays and Thursdays, online learning Sundays and Mondays
Cohort E will continue online learning in the same way as previously done
Tuesdays will be the Dig in Days with the same type of interventions that we have been previously running on Thursdays.
Attendance on campus continues to be optional however students are expected to be in regular contact with their teachers and complete all work assigned.
We continue with our current bell schedule:
With this change in our schedule, we have also amended our Arabic Ministry Exam Schedule. Students in Cohort A and B will complete their exams in their regular Arabic classes when they are on campus. Cohort E will visit campus on Tuesday when students are learning from home in order to minimize any exposure to our Cohort E students. As previously communicated, if your student cannot attend for any reason, please contact their Arabic teacher to let them know in advance. Please follow the schedule below.
Please remember the health protocols for school attendance. Students should not come to school if they have any symptoms. Please contact the clinic if you or any member of your household becomes ill. For those of you dealing with COVID in your families, you continue to be in our thoughts.
Your MS Leadership Team,
Caleb Hatfield
Principal
Kimnada Bobb
Assistant Principal
On-campus school hours have been shortened to 8:00 am - 1:30 pm.
Students at home will meet with their teachers from 1:30 - 2:45 Sunday through Wednesday. Grade 6 will begin this immediately while grades 7 and 8 will begin on March 7th. Grades 7 and 8 will meet during the new on-campus class period times (i.e. Period 1, 8:20 am) beginning Feb 21st through March 3rd.
Thursdays will be structured to provide a brief time for teachers to meet with on-campus students one more time before the week is over. This time will be focused on RAP (Review, Activity, Preview) as students prepare for a week off-campus and online. Students off-campus will not have any mandatory Zoom meetings and will use the day to catch up on assignments from the previous week.
There will be no Homeroom Zoom meetings for students off-campus. All required Zoom classes will be for regular courses.
The next two weeks will be unique as Grade 6 returns to campus and Grades 7 and 8 continue online. Please view below the different schedules that students will follow. (see below)
Attendance for each class is mandatory for all students (both cohorts). Students on campus will have attendance taken at the beginning of class while students online will have attendance taken during their required Zoom meetings.
Opt for Online Only (Cohort E)
This is the last call for any students wanting to opt into Cohort E. Beginning February 21st, we will no longer allow for students to switch between learning models. If choosing Cohort E for your child, please note that this is a commitment until the end of the academic school year. If your child is already registered for Cohort E, nothing needs to be done. If you would like to register them, please complete this form no later than 11:59 PM Saturday, February 20th.
If your child is currently enrolled in Cohort E and you would like to move them back to on-campus learning, please send an email to Mr. Hatfield at chatfield@aisegypt.com and Ms. Kimnada at kbobb@aisegypt.com
everyone correctly wearing masks at all times on campus,
everyone following concepts of social distancing,
mandatory reporting of contact with suspected Covid cases,
full cooperation with contact tracing.
We have organized our reopening plan around three models and have structured the plan to ensure a smooth transition from one model to the other:
100% online Learning model
Hybrid (50/50: students attending on alternating weeks)
100% Face-to-face
Last year, the middle school at AIS Main began to reframe our learning culture with an emphasis on four key areas:
Social Emotional Wellbeing
Service Learning
Engagement
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This school year, we will continue with the same emphasis.
Relationships are foundational for learning. Even in remote environments, students must feel connected to, cared for, and inspired by their teacher and peers. Fostering positive student-teacher, student-student relationships and establishing remote classroom communities that create a sense of belonging for all is critical for students’ overall well being and academic success. We will continue to lean on the principles of Positive Discipline to guide our programs and policies surrounding this area.
Being an informed and engaged global citizen takes on many shapes and sizes in a middle school community. It is our continued goal to find avenues for students, teachers, and parents, to give back to the community. Due to COVID-19, there will be new challenges to making this happen, but our community will look for solutions to keeping this effort real and part of our identity.
Student engagement is essential. Online learning has reinforced our beliefs in student-driven learning, developing an engaging learning environment through real-world teaching and learning, encouraging the students to demonstrate authentic learning through authentic real-world engagement and planning meaningful activities and assessments.
We continue to focus on developing the AISE Portrait of a Graduate traits based on the IB Learner Profile traits and incorporating IB based approaches to Learning (ATL). This year we will be using a specific rubric for assessing and reporting student growth in three key areas:
Commitment to Learning: Engages in acquiring knowledge and skills (Knowledgeable), through asking questions (Inquiry) and stretching personal limits (Risk Taking). Engages in Reflection (Reflective) as well as Critical and Creative thinking (Thinker).
Citizenship and Integrity: Demonstrates academic and personal Integrity (Principled) at all times. Models personal and social responsibility along with empathy for others (Caring). Embodies a Balanced approach to school and life.
Collaboration and Respect: Communicates respectfully with all individuals (Communicator) demonstrating an understanding of and acceptance of individual differences (Open-Minded). Respects the learning culture through demonstrating positive behavior and self management (polite, present, punctual, prepared and participating).
To have learning accessible by all students, a modified “Flipped Classroom” is the MS instructional model for the year. Every course flips the learning so that basic content and skills are explored at home and the deepening of concepts and skills happens with the teacher in a variety of small groups (heterogeneous, homogeneous etc). This “application and discussion” could occur in person or online depending on the situation.
All staff and students will be required to wear masks at all times and follow social distancing guidelines, on campus, in the classroom and on the bus.
Students taking Choir will be required to provide their own face shield and wear it at all times in the choir room
Classrooms and common areas will be disinfected frequently.
Frequent hand-washing will be required of all students and staff.
Arrival, breaks during the day and dismissals will be staggered to prevent large groups from gathering.
Students will arrive straight to class. There will be no morning lines at the field.
There will be no after-school activities, community events or assemblies.
AISE Middle School students, no matter if they are learning from home online or on campus, will continue to be engaged in meaningful and engaging learning. Being mindful of the fact that students at home will not have the same access to support that they might have if on campus, we’ve developed the following supports for our students.
AISE is 100% Online
AISE is Hybrid 50/50
(Cohorts during their Online Week)
Students who have opted for
“Online Only Learning”
All students will have a regular bell schedule in which to access their teachers for live “office hours.”
All students will be able to email their teachers.
All students may schedule a tutoring time with their teacher or a Student Support Teacher (SST) (by appointment only).
All students may contact MSsupport@aisegypt.com for additional questions or concerns.
All students may contact the counselor for additional resources or to get connected with a SST.
This is an option for MS families not yet comfortable with any form of on-campus learning. Students may miss out on some experiences that are only possible when on campus but would complete all activities assigned by the teacher as well as participate in activities adapted for the online environment.
Once the deadline for starting this option has passed, students cannot opt-in or out until the end of the term. Near the end of the term, Online Learning Only families will be given the opportunity to change learning models for their children to attend school on campus or to continue with Online Learning Only for the second semester.
Students enrolled in our Online Learning Only model…
...will have access to an online support teacher.
...will learn alongside other students who have chosen Online Learning Only.
...will learn the same standards and meet the same learning targets as their peers attending on campus.
...will have the opportunity to participate in any on-campus events whenever it is digitally possible.
...must commit to being online only for the entirety of the term.
This message is in support of the communication from the Egyptian Prime Minister, stating that schools are required to operate 100% online through February 20, 2021, and to Dr. Kapono’s announcement that AIS would be beginning the second semester 100% online. As of today, we are expecting a physical return to school in some form on February 21st. See full message here.
While 100% Online Learning, the following will apply:
Attendance is taken daily for each class.
Students are expected to be present, ready to work, and on time for each Zoom class and scheduled appointment.
All students will participate in online learning. (Cohort A, B, E)
The 100% online schedule will be used to create “office hours” time for students to attend classes via video conferencing.
Learning material will be posted by 8 AM daily on Google classroom.
Daily deliverables will be due at 9 PM for each course except on Thursdays.
The students will be divided into two Cohorts (A & B) based on their families. Siblings (K-12) will attend during the same week.
Cohort A attends school in Week A and completes online work in Week B
Cohort B completes online work in Week A and attends school in Week B
All resources are uploaded on Google Classroom to guide the students. Teachers use the modified flipped model to dig deeper into conceptual learning of the power standards with the students attending physical school.
All students will attend classes on campus.
Classes will resume as normal with all students and staff following the general safety procedures.
More information will be provided before school leadership decides to shift to 100% on Campus.
Students are expected to attend the onsite classes along with their cohort. They may not switch cohorts nor attempt to make up onsite classes in the alternate cohort’s week. Student attendance will be monitored closely and meetings will be scheduled with students who are showing a pattern of non-attendance.
All parent meetings will be held through virtual meeting platforms. Please contact Ms. Rehab in the middle school office or your child’s teacher to make an appointment.
Stay in the Know. Follow us on:
