Credit Recovery or Advancement

AISE will offer two different pathways for students who want or need to take additional credits in the 2020-21 academic year. Our partnership with ASU allows us a great deal of flexibility in offering recovery/replacement credits for failing students or enrichment/advancement credits for students wanting to move ahead academically.

Recovery and Replacement Credits - Fresh Start

Students who are failing 1 or more core courses (or graduation required electives), can enroll in the Fresh Start program. This will be an intensive 10 week program beginning on April 11th and ending on June 24th.

  • To enter the program at the start of 4th quarter, students should be mathematically unable to pass. We use guidelines based on grades in our discussions with students and parents If a student has <40% Recovery is essential, between 40%-50% Recovery is highly recommended.

  • They will be removed from their current failing course and placed in a comparable ASU course which will be facilitated by an AISE teacher.

  • If the student is studying on campus, the withdrawn class will be replaced with a study hall to help with time management. The course teacher will have specific office hours dedicated to the ASU courses.

  • When the student leaves the failing course, the course will be recorded on the transcript as "Withdraw Fail" which does not impact on the GPA. This second attempt at the course will be recorded on the transcript as a recovery AISE credit and the grade will count towards the GPA. (Previously, if a student stayed in a failing course until the end of the school year, it negatively affected the GPA and the second attempt did not count towards the ongoing GPA).

  • Here are the courses we will offer for Fresh Start:

    • English grades 9, 10, 11,12

    • IM1, IM2, IM3, PreCalc

    • Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Science

    • US History, Global Perspectives

    • Possibly World Languages, Tech , PE, and Foundations of Art

Final course availability will be determined by student enrollment.

Enrichment and Advancement Credits -Fast Track

Students who are interested in taking a course beyond the ones they are currently studying may enroll in the Fast Track program (up to two course over their four years of HS)

  • They will take an intensive four week course from June 27th -July 30th and the courses will be facilitated by AISE teachers. Course offerings will be based on student interest or numbers and will include PreCalculus for students entering the IB program..

For Students in Grade 11, there will be an opportunity to participate in a dual credit program with Arizona State University which could earn a student both university credit and high school credit (limited to one course).

  • These courses are facilitated by ASU Professors and are run truly as university courses.

  • Specific courses begin on June 8th and run through August 4th while some can be started on flexible dates.

  • Here are some examples of the courses available for dual credit advancement:

    • ASM 246 Human Origins

    • BIO 100 The Living World

    • COM 100 Introduction to Human Communication

    • HEP 100 Introduction to Health and Wellness

    • ENG 101 English Composition

    • SES 106 Habitable Worlds

    • MAT 265 Calculus for Engineers I

    • MAT 210 Brief Calculus

    • MAT 170 Precalculus

    • MAT 117 College Algebra

    • HST 102 Europe and the Mediterranean

These would show on the transcript as an online credit and would not factor into the GPA. For students planning on going to university in the USA, Arizona State representatives have said that these credits should be transferable to any American University but that is up to the individual university where a student applies.

Benefits

Both the Fresh Start and Fast Track programs employ AISE teacher to facilitate the ASU curriculum. These teachers know our students. Ms. Jensen and Ms. Johnston will be the administrators for these programs and have been working with ASU for online cohort this past semester. ASU has a learning platform that is simple for both students and parents to navigate. Parents will be able to track their child's progress through an ASU portal. The courses are self paced within guidelines and students are encouraged and coached to establish a time management plan which outlines all of their upcoming assignments. Partway through the program there will be a review of progress to ensure students are pacing themselves to finish on time. For students failing multiple cores, this is an opportunity not to have to repeat the grade next school year.

Arizona State University is a world class university that has partnerships with many schools and is highly experienced in developing and delivering engaging online courses. When the program starts, students will know every assignment and task due and will be able to plan their time wisely.
