We piloted this course with a selected cohort in summer 2025, then converted it into a self-paced format available to all AIGS members.
For each Unit, there are six sections:
Learning Objectives - This gives you a quick overview of what the Unit attempts to teach you.
Lesson Content - Materials we presented during the synchronous classes and adjusted for self-paced learning
Readings - A reading list curated by the team
Reflection Questions - Optional
Supporting Materials - For more in-depth engagement or practical content to support your policy journey
Lesson Plan Template - For you to use if you study as a group and go through the class content together
This course does not offer a completion certificate.
You can browse through the course materials on your own time, read what appears valuable to you, and skip what you are already familiar with. We recommend thinking through the Reflection Questions to confirm for yourself whether you have taken in the content fully.
Want to learn alongside others? You can coordinate with fellow members to take the course synchronously!
Each Unit includes a Lesson Plan Template designed for a 90-minute class with 4-16 participants. For larger groups, we recommend splitting into parallel cohorts. You can customize the exercises, format, and length to fit your needs.
The Templates are optimized for online delivery but can be adapted for in-person sessions. Find the templates under "Lesson Plan Template" at the bottom of each Unit.
Getting started: Use the AIGS Slack to find other interested learners—post in #aigs-policy, then create a dedicated channel for your group.
You might want to have one Organizer who takes charge of:
Creating a Slack channel for the cohort
Polling the participants for a date and time
We find weekly meetings work well!
Scheduling a virtual, repeat meeting
Invite everyone to the calendar event
Send a reminder a few hours before the start of the class
Select one participant to be the facilitator for each Unit (you can rotate!), tasking them with:
Making a copy of the Lesson Plan Template for the Unit and sharing it with all participants in advance
Adding it to the calendar invite works well!
Pre-reading the Lesson Plan and adjusting it for your needs
Number of participants, change the exercises, etc.
Taking responsibility for breakout rooms during class, where necessary
Guiding the discussion
Go through the class feedback (space for this is provided in the Lesson Plan) and post a summary in your Slack channel with ideas for improvement of the next session.
