Understanding & Preparing for the ACT
The purpose of the ACT test is to measure a high school student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. College admissions officers will review standardized test scores alongside your high school GPA, the classes you took in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays.
How important ACT scores are in the college application process varies from school to school with many schools now offering test optional admissions. The ACT can also impact your financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

NewACTchart.pdfBeginning in April 2025, students who choose to take the ACT online will see an updated format that’s shorter and lets you choose whether to include the science section, allowing for greater flexibility while maintaining the accuracy and reliability colleges rely on. These changes will also apply to the paper-pencil test starting in September 2025. The Composite score will now focus on English, math, and reading, while science scores will be reported separately for those who take it. For the most current information, click here.
