An apprenticeship is a program that trains you to become skilled in one particular trade or profession, whether it be hairstyling, plumbing, electrical work, etc. It typically combines classroom learning with hands-on work.

Twin Cities Area Apprenticeship Training Centers 

An apprenticeship in the construction and building trades features modern, state-of-the-art training facilities; knowledgeable and experienced trainers; and a challenging and rewarding course of study.

The Laborers Training Center (LTC) provides industry-specific vocational skills and certification renewal training for its members in Minnesota and North Dakota.

The ICATT Apprenticeship Program is a global program that combines company-specific knowledge and hands-on learning to train a competitive workforce. 

Joseph T. Ryerson has locations in Coon Rapids and Plymouth and recently developed an 18-month apprenticeship program to help train future employees while giving them the opportunity to earn credentials and become fully employed. 

A pipefitter apprenticeship is a five-year paid program in which apprentices receive both on-the-job practical training and classroom instruction.  Apprentices attend school in the evening, typically two nights a week. They must pass all courses with a minimum score of 70% to advance to the next year in the program. Tuition for school is $540.00 per year plus books. Apprentices will graduate to journey-level workers after passing the Minnesota State Pipefitting License exam. 

Internships

How do you find an internship?

Most internships are for college students and you will get great work experience doing any job in high school; however, there are some sites to help you find paid and unpaid internships.  

MNDOT Phoenix Worker Program - (Apply in 11th grade)
Twin Cities internship for high school students relating to PLTW, STEM, and engineering. 

Biomedical Engineering High School Internship - (Apply in 11th grade)
Gain hands-on experience in biomedical engineering the summer before your senior year through our paid, award-winning, six-week internship program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Minnesota. Applications due May 1. 

Summer Health Care Internship Program - (Apply in 11th or 12th grade)
The Summer Health Care Internship Program (SHCIP) is a program administered by the Minnesota Hospital Association on behalf of the Minnesota Department of Health. The program brings students and employers together to give students experience in a health care environment. Participating organizations employ students between Memorial Day and Labor Day for six to 12 weeks and pay them at least minimum wage. Postings open in February - contact as soon as possible. 

Lillehei Heart Institute LHI-AHA Summer Scholar Program (16+)
The Lillehei Heart Institute offers annual summer research scholarships in basic science research related to cardiovascular disease. These highly competitive, prestigious scholarships are designed to expose highly qualified students to several disciplines within cardiovascular disease research and its clinical applications. Each scholar will be supported by a research scholarship. The major focus will be intensive basic or clinical research as each scholar will be assigned a laboratory and a faculty mentor. In addition, scholars will be introduced to clinical, industrial, and academic medicine through a variety of field trips, seminars and hands on experiences. Weekly seminars by faculty and industry leaders will be given to offer the scholar a window into career opportunities in cardiovascular science and medicine. The goal of these scholarships is to encourage medical and scientific careers in Cardiovascular Medicine.  Applications due February 1
