November 15, 2016: The day I lost my mother, my best friend, my waache. Ever since then, I have been trying to uphold her legacy as best as I could while juggling the difficult process of grieving. When I took the photographs “Junior Miss Seminole” and “The Legacy She Left Behind”, I realized that there were so many stories and memories to tell of my mother. This portfolio is filled with photographs within photographs that shows the impact she left and themes of reflection.
My mother was such a beautiful person, inside and out. She was also the strongest person I knew. Losing her felt like I lost a piece of my soul but this body of work has somewhat filled that emptiness to its best attempts. It has become an outlet and has allowed me to reflect on the time I had with her. The absence of new memories I could have with her has been extremely difficult. But through photography, I am allowed to make “new” memories. The preciousness of time and memories is something that has been emphasized in my life since her passing. She inspires me every day to keep going without even being here. So, “Susie Q” is a tribute to my strong, beautiful mother. The first tribute out of many to come. I love you two pieces, mom.
