My photography explores themes of my identity and my European familial heritage. With my last name being Vogt—a very German last name—and having heard stories of my European past, it was always imperative to me that I learn more about my generational heritage. After doing my so-called pilgrimage to Europe to see the traditions and landscapes, this body of work accurately demonstrates the importance of my heritage. I work with digital photography, which allows me to experiment with lighting, texture, and colors. Experimenting with natural light, angles, and movement allows me to compose each image as an important part of my history. I am able to take photos of European settings that encapsulate the deep roots of Europe within my familial lineage. My goal is for viewers to reflect on their own histories and how they can shape their own familial identity. Influenced primarily by Wolfgang Tillmans—another German photographer—I aim to express my personal heritage within my experimental style. This body of work represents a deeper search of knowing who I am and how I was formed this way generationally.
