Artist Statement

I have always been motivated by a desire to understand the past and its influence on the future. I often wonder how my parents got together and what their life was like before they divorced when I was 5 years old. In this portfolio, I ask the questions: "How has my identity been shaped by the presence, as well as absence, of family members?" and "Who am I, within the context of my family and beyond?". I combine symbolism with photo realistic painting to express emotions I experience along my quest for a greater understanding of my identity.
