About Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat (population and area wise) and the sixth largest metropolitan city in India (on the basis of population, with population of more than 6 million as of 2011 Census).

Located on the banks of Sabarmati River, the city of Ahmedabad gathers the layers of history o f more than 600 years. Although Ahmedabad is a bustling metropolitan with reputed institutions and a rapidly growing economy, it is deeply rooted in traditions. Apart from its unique settlement planning and layers of vernacular architectural traditions, Ahmedabad is also known for having four buildings designed by Le Corbusier, and one institutional campus by Louis Kahn. It also has two ashrams of Mahatma Gandhi from where he began his social and political movement for Independent India – which is known for its non-violence approach.

The city sprawls on both sides of the Sabarmati River. The east side contains the ‘old city’, where as the major institutional area including the Ahmedabad University (the conference venue) is on the west side of the River. The Conference Venue (Ahmedabad University) is 11kms from Airport (30 mins drive approx.), 6 kms from Kalupur Railway Station (20 mins drive approx.). There are hotels on both sides of the River, and close to the university as well. There are heritage hotels as well as Bed & Breakfast accommodation at traditional buildings (Havelis) in the old city. Special rates negotiated with many of these accommodation options will be updated on the conference page soon.
