Assess Initial Student Learning Needs

How will we collect initial student learning data to determine student learning needs at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year?

  • Teachers utilizing created spreadsheets to document standards covered and missed due to COVID-19

a) K-5 Standards covered prior to COVID-19 closure

b) 6-8 Standards covered prior to COVID-19 closure

c) 9-12 Standards covered prior to COVID-19 closure

  • Pre-assessments before each unit

  • Staff Professional Development on creating, distributing, and analyzing pre-assessment data (beyond test/quiz) to drive teaching/learning

  • Use of FAST Assessment screening outside of the testing windows for grades K-8

  • HS and non-FAST areas will use pre-assessments to determine the pre-requisite standards to review

  • Teachers will utilize the standards spreadsheet (above) to access student learning data at the HS level-department level meetings to determine instructional decisions

How will we summarize and analyze initial student learning data?

  • Staff Professional Development

How will we establish collaborative home-school routines around student learning data?

  • The district will send an informational letter to all parents explaining the why behind additional academic screening, professional development options for teachers, and how we are planning to close the learning gaps for students.

  • Moving the fall parent-teacher conferences to 1st mid-term for earlier connections with parents. Additional video conferencing and time options to increase connection.

Match Curriculum to Student Learning Needs

How will we establish a standards-based scope and sequence?

  • Teachers will engage in vertical alignment conversations to ensure all Iowa Standards are covered

  • Teachers utilizing created spreadsheets to document standards covered and missed due to COVID-19

c) 9-12 Standards covered prior to COVID-19 closure

  • Teachers utilizing units/projects/assessments that bundle multiple standards for the subject and/or across subject areas.

How will we develop gap-closing district and school calendars and schedules?

  • Teachers will develop a list of essential skills for students to have exposure before the school year begins.

  • Establish a protocol for staff absences.

  • Use of MTSS structure/plan to help close learning gaps of students due to COVID-19.

  • Development of a grading/feedback system that factors in the conditions created by COVID-19.

Accelerate Student Learning Using Effective Instruction Matched to Student Needs

In addition to utilizing district policy/standards of education and best instructional practices to match individual student needs, we will:

  • Use of MTSS structure/plan to help close learning gaps of students due to COVID-19.

  • Development of a grading/feedback system that factors in the conditions created by COVID-19.
