The instructional systems design model (ISD) was developed by Dick & Carey. Every component draws from foundational learning theories in the field. This model is part of a family of instructional design models referred to "backwards design."
Backwards design begins with goals, objectives, and other components; as opposed to starting with the content. In this manner, the designer focuses only on what learners need to know in order to accomplish outcomes and the activities required to do so. Content and materials are collected and created with in the 7th stage of the design model.
It's important to consider the areas of ISD as stages, not steps. The model may be considered in a more sequential matter; however, concepts, needs, boundaries, activities, evaluation methods, strategies, and content may appear throughout the design process.
