Intent

At Wishmore Cross Academy, we want all children to develop into lifelong readers and communicators through reading a wide range of quality texts and having meaningful discussions. We have developed an ambitious, creative and innovative English Curriculum to support and inspire all of our learners. We recognise that English underpins the work undertaken in all other areas of the curriculum and is essential for educational and social progress, and have tailored our curriculum to meet the needs of all of our learners.

“Reading for pleasure is the single best indicator of a child’s academic success.” (OECD)

Implementation

High-quality texts (including a wide range of stories, poems, rhymes, and non-fiction) have been carefully chosen to enrich the teaching and learning, and provide memorable and enriching experiences for our pupils, as well as developing pupils’ vocabulary, language comprehension and love of reading. We promote a love of reading and stories through a range of initiatives such as daily story time. Our reading books are graded so that they are matched to each child’s phonic knowledge. Our teachers read to children and model reading aloud, changing the tone and intonation in their voice and pausing for punctuation. Our teachers are enthusiastic, engaging readers who encourage a love of reading for pleasure. Through focused book talk, the skills taught in English lessons are applied to reading across the curriculum.

Impact

Each pupil makes at least one year of progress, with the aim of more than this to make accelerated progress. At the end of each key stage, pupils will be working nearer to or at age related expectations than when they joined the academy. Progress is measured through use of formative assessment in class, as well as summative assessments which take place twice a year.
