From 1860-1882, hundreds of thousands of Chinese immigrated to the U.S. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act banned further Chinese immigration. In this lesson, students will explore the social and economic factors that fueled the wave of Chinese immigrants as well as the factors that eventually led to their exclusion. You will examine an excerpt from an anti-Chinese play, a political cartoon, an anti-Chinese labor speech, and an immigrant’s autobiography.
