Pre-completion for training before you complete your degree
Post-completion for training after your degree is completed
STEM extension for students who complete their program (and request the extension) by December 31, 2024. This is a temporary initiative to extend academic training for an additional period for students in STEM fields. Speak with the RO in the OISVS if you believe you may be qualified.
Academic training is available for degree students for a total of 18 months if you have employment. Students who matriculate to work on additional degrees in the U.S. are not eligible for additional periods of academic training, with the possible exception of Ph.D. students.
Each month of academic training counts against the total 18 months, regardless of whether it is full-time or part-time AT.
Students who have completed a Bachelor or Master degree in a U.S. government designated STEM eligible field may receive additional academic training time, up to a maximum total of 36 months. The total length of academic training may not exceed the time spent in the classroom.
Be a full-time student at ACU, and primarily in the U.S. to study rather than engage in academic training;
Have an offer for employment that is directly related to your major field of study;
You should be able to articulate a direct correlation between the training activities and the academic coursework in your major;
The employment must not be more than 40% remote (2 days out of 5), with a U.S.-based employer;
The employment must consist of primarily substantive roles designed to expose participants to the operations of their field (very limited non-substantive tasks such as making coffee, etc…)
Be in good academic standing and in good immigration status;
Be covered by health insurnace that meets or exceeds the Department of State requirements
Receive written approval in advance for the desired academic training.

You are covered by health insurance which meets the U.S. Department of State minimum requirements for the duration of your academic training period for you and any dependents.
Apply at least 1 week before you complete your studies;
Not have any gaps in employment. This means if you change employers, the work period must be uninterrupted.
Your authorization to remain in the U.S. is dependent on the employment which you submitted for authorization of academic training. If you quit your job or your employment ends for any reason, your academic training is completed. If this occurs, you are required to do the following:
a) Inform the RO, who will complete your status.
b) Leave the U.S. within 30 days
If your job objectives change or you find new employment, you must submit a new application for academic training to the RO within 10 days and be approved before beginning the new employment. Please consult the RO in these cases as soon as possible.
It is not possible to extend the academic training beyond the 18-month period unless the U.S. Department of State initiates a special provision (such as for STEM students between 2021-2024.)
Travel after program completion and prior to commencement of academic training is not recommended. Discuss your possible travel plans with the RO.

U.S. Department of State J-1 Exchange Visitor Insurance Requirements
Sponsors must require that all exchange visitors (as well as their accompanying spouses and dependents) have insurance in effect that covers them for sickness or accidents during the time of their exchange visitor program. The recent rule increases the minimum coverage to meet today’s medical insurance needs. As of May 15, 2015, minimum coverage must provide medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness; repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000; expenses associated with medical evacuation to the exchange visitor’s home country in the amount of $50,000; and deductibles cannot exceed $500 per accident or illness (Section 62.14(a)). Inadequate insurance coverage may be catastrophic for an individual exchange visitor. Thus, the Department increased the requirements.
Program participants and their dependents are required to have medical insurance coverage with the following minimum benefits [22 CFR 62.14].
Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
Sponsors are to require that their participants (and any dependents entering the United States as holders of a J-2 visa) have insurance in effect during the period of time they are in the sponsor's program. An insurance policy secured to meet the benefits requirements must be underwritten by an insurance corporation with an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-I" or above, a Standard and Poor's Claims Paying Ability rating of "A-" or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above. Alternatively, the sponsor may ascertain that the participant's policy is backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor's home country. For other options, see [22 CFR 62.14].
