Book Swap-We held our 10th annual book swap. We received donations from families and our larger community. 100% of students received a book during the book swap.
Building Community Partnerships-Upon our return post-Helene Ms. Hendrix secured book donations from prominent children's authors, New York Times best-selling authors Jennifer Holm, Jeff Kinney, and Terri Libenson for all of our elementary schools and middle school.
Equity at our Scholastic Book Fairs- All students were able to receive a book at our Scholastic Book Fairs with the help of our Book Wish program. We also reflected on last year's book fair and made some changes this year in hopes of making this a better even for our entire school community. We partnered with Scholastic to host one book fair this year which was a buy one get one freefair. We advocated for a buy one get one free fair with Scholastic in hopes of lessening the financial stress on our families. Typically Scholastic does not let schools host buy one get one free Fairs- without hosting two fairs during the school year, BUT strong advocacy allowed us to bring this to our school community.
Public Library/School Library Partnership-Ms. Hendrix partnered with the Buncombe County Public Library to co-author a grant to host Mac Barnett, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. While we did not receive the grant (it was a long shot) new connections were made and partnerships forged.
Dickson Little Free Library-We solicit donations and maintain our school's Little Free Library.
Morning Announcements - Mr. Emry lead 5th graders in creating daily morning announcement videos to help bring the entire school community together. We hope to add additional features to these announcements next year including more staff spotlights and a standard practice of having classes create learning videos while reflecting on their field trips.
