Ms. Hendrix taught all K-3 classes on a fixed schedule this year for a total of fifteen classes each week. Each class visited the library for 45 minutes each week. 4th and 5th grade students visited the library independently or in small groups throughout the day to check out library books. Library specials with K-3 focused on social/emotional learning, literacy skills and story elements such as identifying character, main character, setting, problem, solution, etc.
The focus for the year with 4th and 5th grade classes was choosing just right books and building reading stamina.
Ms. Hendrix supported students with 30 minutes of cafeteria duty every day of the week and 30 minutes of after school duty every day of the week.
From September to mid-May, Dickson Pre-K students visited the library once a week for a book checkout.
From December to mid-April Ms. Hendrix held weekly Battle of the Books practice. The IDES team finished in second place this year.
In quarter 1, before Helene, Mr. Emry taught digital citizenship classes to introduce Chromebooks and iPads to all students.
When we returned to school after the hurricane, Mr. Emry worked with 4 first-year teachers on using a Gimkit lesson frame to review vocabulary and math content in an effective manner.
Mr. Emry supported all classrooms in the building; teaching and modelling digital citizenship, introducing new apps and skills, creating and leading BreakoutEDU breakout box challenges, creating Schoolnet assessments, leading students through the video creation process, and curating and facilitating VR experiences were among the many activities he helped with. He also began a student announcement crew with 5th graders to create daily morning announcement videos for the entire school.
