Play I spy by having kids blend the word together. (EX: I spy something /r/ /e/ /d/ . You child has to put the sounds together to figure out the word is red.) Then they have to look for something red. If they get it, its their turn and they have to say I spy something and break their word apart. (EX: child says I spy some /b/ /i/ /g/) Blending (putting sounds together) and segmenting (breaking words apart) are key reading skills
I spy- easier. If segmenting and blending is too difficult. Try starting with first sounds (EX: I spy something that start with /d/. A dog!)
Have child count as high as they can. Stop them and IMMEDIATELY correct mistakes. Make sure you're listening closely, it's easy to skip or number and K/1 students often skip a number then continue on without noticing.
Practice rhyming words (EX: do you think boat and goat rhyme? What about dog and cat?)
Simple words problems they can do on their fingers (EX: There are 3 spiders on a web. 1 spider crawls away. How many are left? Or Your sister has two cookies. I give her two more. How many cookies does she have now?)
Talk to your child about anything. Vocabulary is so important at this age. Ask them to tell you their favorite memory and ask for details like who was there? How did you feel? What time of day was this?
