In this assignment, you will learn to take measurements for costume design and creation. Watch the videos below on how to take someones measurements. You will then create a video and include it on FlipGrid of you taking the measurements of someone in your home. Add in details and observations of this process on your Digital Journal Doc.

Watch these two videos on a costume designer about her process and research. Why is research into the era an important concept for a costume designer?
You will be building a costume from items around your home based on some characters in the list below. You will design the costume in drawings and while you then turn from page to the stage.... you will take progress photos and a short video of your costume in action moving around as in character.
Make sure that you add in as many progress shots as possible, and also any photos showcasing the detail of your character. When you present the costume as a character in your video, you might want to create a sound or voice to match that character and have them explain who they are and where they have come from including any special items that their costume might do. Maybe even some theme music in the background?!?
In the GOOGLE SLIDE Attached, you will find some examples of these ideas.
FAQ:
Can you use clothing as a base to add your items to? YES as long as we don't see the original clothing.
Can you use fabric to create your costume? As this is really a challenge to be creative with what you have at home in your recycle bin, Id like to see more happening with an unusual collection of items.
What if I don't have glue or tape? Im attaching some links on ways to attach things to each other without tape or glue. Take a look in that. Be creative and solve your problems as you encounter them!
Do I have to wear the costume? If you have someone willing in your family to wear the costume and but you will need to also deliver the explanation for the costume/character then go for it!
Objective
To create a complete head to toe costume that matches a description of a character from the list below using recyclable objects, & materials (NOT based fully on clothing, but you may sew your own project)
You must submit some drawing/designs of your costume and have those presented in class for feedback.
Please be aware that this project will take some time to complete with expectations that your project is well made.
Materials
Have glue, glitter, tape, craft supplies, etc. available as well as recyclable materials such as newspaper, toilet paper, material, cardboard. Whatever your brain can come up with to use!
Rules
• You may use materials any way you see fit. (minus premade clothing unless using as a base layer that other things attach to)
• You may use any materials you have/find as long as they are not genuine articles of clothing. A shirt, for instance, cannot be used as a shirt. (unless as a base layer with other things attached to it)
• There can be no street clothes showing on the finished product – if your character needs shoes, gloves or socks, you will have to make them/ cover them with something.
• You may not steal exact ideas from the internet, but you may borrow and adapt.
• Nothing is ugly in theatre, it is art. Just make sure it is well made!
• Keep it appropriate for school use.
Characters
The Bride: She comes from a wealthy background and is very concerned with being in fashion. She has always dreamed of a big traditional wedding.
The Monster From the Black Lagoon: He is icky, he is slimy, he is disgusting. Enough said.
A Shakespearean-type wood nymph fairy (non – gender specific): Your basic crafty little mischief-maker. Should look “other-worldly” and may have magical powers.
A Lion: King of the jungle. This lion is from a children’s story theatre script and should have a good-
humoured storybook style to him. As in... cute and approachable rather than scary.
A Tree: This tree is very overgrown and old and is, in fact, a sinister old witch who has had a spell cast on her a hundred years ago! It should be free to move around.Lots of detail with the bark, branches and leaves.
New-age Munchkin: This little one has evolved from the days of Oz. He/she is hip and up-to-date, but
still holds onto the values of long ago. This is Oz in the future... looking quite futuristic.
Have an idea for a costume that you might want to use instead and maybe use for Halloween? I need to see plans and designs for the idea for approval to make sure that it is detailed enough to consider adding it.
SUBMIT:
1) Prepare your design on the template provided for your costume design and submit for feedback to the Google Drive.
Once you have received feedback on your design from your peers, start building your project.
2) SUBMIT HERE: Google slide document with the original design and updated versions of the design from feedback received in class. Include also the photos of your creation from all different angles showing your design in detail.
3) SUBMIT TO FLIPGRID: A video of your character in motion moving and presenting the story. They should utilize any aspects of the costume that we need to see in detail.
4) SUBMIT: Portfolio using 2-3 slides to showcase your learning journey through this project.
You will receive feedback on this project with items to improve during class with Targeted Feedback sessions and will then submit along with your PORTFOLIO for Summative assessment.
How to make your own glue:
As part of the process you will design your project and then start creating something to share out with the group. You will use the feedback forms for each session that we are working on. Please ensure that the questions you are asking are specific enough that it gets you what you want to know, and that the responses you provide are good for details and would be something you wouldnt mind receiving as feedback. In other words... be polite!
You can add photos, video links, and images to the documents to help everyone understand what you are asking. As you are making this costume at home, you will need to provide good videos showcasing your project and construction.

The Project:
You will design the costume in drawings and while you then turn from page to the stage.... you will take progress photos and a short video of your costume in action moving around as in character.
Please place the progress photos and short video into a Gslide that you will submit to GClass.
You will submit your final design into the Shared GDrive and also upload it to the assignment on GClass for assessment. We will be doing a Peer review and evaluation of each others work as part of the summative assignment. You will be giving an evaluation of each others work in the format of a SWOT. Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities or awesome ideas, and Target. The importance of being able to critique others work is a valuable skill to learn through this process.
TASK:
Upload your GSlide with photos of your work clearly labelled with what it is referencing to the Shared GDrive
Upload your Gslide to Gclass for assessment.
