EFL 1 is the introductory year of a continuing rotating course that provides the initial foundation for English and content study to non-native beginner level students in grade 6 only.

The program comprises five separate and mandatory blocks covering two periods of Language Development and one period respectively of Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.

The course aims to develop conversational skills, basic vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing skills. A basic level of English skills will be developed through the use of thematically based units and an assigned graded reader in the second semester. Themes to be covered include: People, Family Life, Food, Possessions, Places, City Life, Occupations, Free Time, Money, Journeys, Expressing Mathematics, Time, Weather, Culture, Expressing Feelings/Emotions, Sports, and Talking about the Past, Present, and Future. Fundamentals in grammar will be reinforced through these themes in a variety of written, listening and oral activities.

There will be an introduction to Language Arts ( alphabet, decoding skills, reading, and simple sentence/paragraph writing), Science and Social Studies through glossaries and simplified texts. (This course corresponds to the A1 level of CEFR)
