This interview assignment was our journalism project for Quarter Three. Students had to pair up and pick a topic in which they would interview specific types of people on it. It was a project to enable students to enter the world of journalism and make them feel as if they are journalists, themselves.
Here is Yasmin and Fatma's interview project in which they chose the celebrations of the National Liberation Day of Kuwait as a topic to discuss and ask questions to different people at the Avenues Mall.
The national liberation day of Kuwait was coming up this time of the year and citizens started having arguments on how they’re supposed to celebrate. Traditionally, most people celebrate the national day of Kuwait by having continuous water fights, water guns, etc., in the public streets of Kuwait. Citizens of all ages would be in the streets throwing water balloons at each other and on the cars.
Because of that, some people started disliking the idea of celebrating this way for many reasons and of the most famous one is the waste of water use in the country. As water is an important use of a person’s daily routine, going to the biggest public mall in Kuwait and asking different strangers questions on the national day celebration, itself, was the only solution to cover this issue.
1. Are you aware of Kuwait’s national day?
Yes, unfortunately I'm aware.
2. Do you celebrate Kuwait’s national day and how?
I would like to celebrate Kuwait’s national day. However, sadly, I don’t because I do not want to show any kind of support to how others celebrate the national day which is by wasting water.
3. Do you agree with how others celebrate Kuwait’s national day? (By using water balloons, water guns, etc.)?
No, I do not agree with how others celebrate Kuwait’s national day at all, and I think the way they’re celebrating Kuwait’s National day is destroying our country. Also, it is giving the kids a wrong impression on how to celebrate things, which is something I do not want my kids to grow into.
4.Why do you think some Kuwaiti citizens travel on their national day? Do you agree or disagree with that?
It’s sad and shameful that Kuwaiti citizens travel on their own national liberation day. However, I don’t blame them since the celebrations here in Kuwait are way worse than celebrating by travelling.
5. How do you personally think us Kuwaitis should celebrate national day?
I think we should celebrate the national day by having some outdoor events and fun carnivals. Us Kuwaitis should have to make Kuwait an entertaining country since we always find ourselves complaining on why Kuwait isn’t as “touristic” as other places.
6. Would you like to add anything else?
Yes. I would like to add that people should be aware of their behavior and what they’re teaching their kids, and that it is extremely wrongful to waste water while others don’t even have a drop of water to drink. Another problem is that instead of celebrating their national day they are wasting their own country’s water, disrupting their country and ruining its reputation. We should ask ourselves if that behavior is even considered a way of “celebrating”.
1. Are you aware of Kuwait’s national day?
Yes, we are obviously aware.
2. Do you celebrate Kuwait’s national day and how?
We usually don’t celebrate Kuwait’s national day, but if we had kids we would by giving them water balloons and water guns to play with just like the rest.
3. Do you agree with how others celebrate Kuwait’s national day? (By using water balloons, water guns, etc)?
We do agree because at the end of the day kids will be kids, and it’s not a problem if they used water balloons and enjoyed themselves since it’s only for a couple of days, and let’s not forget that it’s their freedom.
4. Why do you think some Kuwaiti citizens travel on their national day? Do you agree or disagree with that?
We think that most Kuwaiti citizens travel on their national day to take advantage of the holiday. We personally agree because we think it’s a freedom of choice.
5. How do you personally think us Kuwaitis should celebrate national day?
We think that it’s fine to celebrate it by using water balloons and water guns and just the way that it is since the kids are having fun celebrating their country’s national day. However, we should have more fun and interesting events to attend where we can all gather and celebrate together with love.
6. Would you like to add anything else?
Yes, we personally enjoy the celebrations that naturally occur, but even if we didn’t, it’s still considered a freedom of choice. Everyone is responsible for themselves and everyone has the choice to enjoy him/herself.
To conclude, whether people disagree with it or not, National Liberation Day is supposed to be a day when Kuwaiti citizens are filled with pride and happiness. To live in a country and to feel proud living in it is an understatement that should be taken into consideration. With that said, whether it’s from celebrating or throwing a piece of garbage on the streets, Kuwaiti citizens should take care of their country.
They have their own freedom of choice which also means each citizen is responsible for his/her actions; so, whatever mess they make in life they have to fix it, especially a mess that affects many people. Celebrating the national day of Kuwait should be an entertaining event for the youth and adults. The only way to make this possible, just like the people interviewed said, is by hosting fun carnivals and events, which would be the perfect option for this prideful celebration.
