Roqaya Al Sabah:
I simply think that this shows the power of journalism. Through journalism, her message was spread and she seemed as if she had a voice and was actually acknowledged for her work and her stance. The video claims that lynchings like these happened all over the American South often without a subsequent legal investigation or consequences for the murderers; however, when she stood up, things changed.
The reports she concluded and got a hold of launched her career as an investigative journalist and came as a major shock to the nation. She went to great lengths to uncover the mystery of the death of her close friends as an act of bravery and loyalty, considering she was a woman and, eventually, a target.
Even with all that being said, she never stopped. Her words spread so quickly and widely as a pioneer for the Civil Rights Movement and as a journalist investigator. In addition, writing as a journalist, by the early 1890's she gained a reputation as a clear voice against racial injustice as well as became the co-owner and editor of the Memphis free speech and headlight.
Her careful documentation of the horrors of lynching and impassioned public speeches drew attention. This further elucidates that as a journalist, you get a voice and have the freedom to express, edit, and write. This proves that the significance of being a journalist could help with numerous things such as gaining a voice, solving mysteries, and having an impact on people.
Lolwa Al Motairi:
After watching the video, I have come to the realization of how important being a journalist is. Journalism helped Ida B. Wells convey her ideas and beliefs to the rest of the world. Ida B. Wells was an investigative journalist, civic leader, and civil rights advocate. She stood up for what she believed was right, and she gained a reputation as a clear voice against racial injustice.
Through her writings she wished to expose the truth about the murders, and her reports shocked many people in the nation. She used the pen name "Iola" to inform people about the disastrous crimes of lynching and why whites believed it was justifiable. She was born into slavery, which she was against so she used all her power to express her beliefs in her writings.
She investigated racially-motivated murders and discovered that it was a cruel tactic to punish people of color for competing with Whites. She published what she discovered, which caused a White mob to ruin her newspaper presses. This incident emphasizes how difficult and challenging this profession could be. Luckily, she wasn’t hurt, but many other writers have been injured or even murdered for words they have written down and published.
Journalism can be both a good and difficult profession, since we can express our feelings and thoughts in our writings. Yet, we can also get affected in a bad way because many people who disagree with your thinking might end up hurting you. I have realized this, especially after watching the video, since Ida used her ability to write and she elucidated her thoughts to spread a message about racial discrimination. Many Black people agreed with her since they wanted their rights but got threats from several people or mobs.
Moreover, her being a woman and a journalist caused her much trouble as this wasn’t acceptable back then. However, this never stopped her from fighting for her rights, justice, and equality. This signifies how courageous and devoted she really was in gaining the rights for people of color. Ida never gave up even after her life became menacing, which would have hurt her along with her family.
In conclusion, Ida’s life and work shows how important journalism is in our lives. It could be used to speak about catastrophes and problems happening in our lives nowadays. It could also be used to spread awareness about a specific issue or situation occurring currently in the world.
