How do I read to remember?
Many times we read material, especially something like a textbook, and when we are done we have no idea what we read. If done correctly the first time, you should not have to spend time re-reading before a test.
Reading for comprehension (to understand and remember) takes time, but it pays off in the long run. Here are the keys to remembering what you have read:
Read a manageable chunk of material. Perhaps it will be a paragraph or maybe a few paragraphs.
Close the book, cover the text, or look away. Write down the key points that you remember.
Go back to what you have read and double check that you got all of the key points written down.
Think about any examples to help explain key points and write them down.
Write down any questions you have about the reading.
Follow these steps reading small chunks at a time, until the entirety of the reading is done.
You may want to leave space (1/2 the notebook page) to write class notes next to the notes you took while reading.
The key to remembering what you have read is thinking deeply about the material, thinking about examples and how the material connects to what you already know, and also thinking about how the material is relevant to your life.
