Welcome to Advanced Placement Psychology! This will be a full year course designed to introduce the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of people. Throughout the course we will explore the role of biology, environment and the mind in shaping human behavior. Advanced Placement is meant to mirror an entry level college course – so get ready to work! At the end of the course you will have an opportunity to take the Advanced Placement Psychology test. Doing well on that exam may potentially earn you college credit. My goal throughout the course of this year will be to not only engage and excite you about the study of psychology, but also to prepare you for success on the AP test. Therefore, the content we will cover this year has been determined by the College Board and correlates to the material that will be on the AP exam.
COURSE ESSENTIALS - very important information!!
A summary of the things that I think are most important for you to know as we begin the year together.
Course Expectations
I want to be very clear about my expectations for you, so that you know exactly what you need to do to be successful!
Be present! That means not only in body, but also in mind and spirit as well. I will always give you 100% of my time, attention and effort. I expect the same in return. The more attention and focus you have in our time together the better you will do.
Academic integrity: I am here to help you learn and develop a foundation of knowledge in psychology. The tasks I ask you to do have been created with the direct function of enhancing your learning. Copying or cheating does not do anything for your learning! You are wasting your and my time. Do not make me question your integrity, as once that has been damaged it is hard to rebuild.
Reciprocity: This is the principle that there is give and take in a relationship. In my role as your teacher I will do everything possible to help you succeed. I am happy to devote my time and energy in doing whatever I can for you, whether that be extra help, recommendations for scholarships, etc... However, relationships are not just one way. In exchange for my effort I expect the same level of effort and commitment from you. As the student, I need you to give me your best everyday.
Communication: I want you to succeed. I cannot help you if I do not know that you are struggling. The only way I may know is if you tell me. Please reach out to me and let me know if you are have concerns, are having difficulty or if there is something that is interfering with your success. I have been teaching 21 years and all students struggle! The difference between students who succeed and those who do not is knowing to ask for help! If we are in the building you can stop by my room S111 anytime or if we are in virtual learning email me at farrja@abington.k12.pa.us
Grading
A typical unit will consist of the following assignments:
reading, a study guide, reading quizzes and a major unit test.
Occasionally, there may be additional enrichment assignments depending upon the unit.
I do not believe in busy work!! Every assignment I give you has been developed to help you learn the material. If you do not do the assignments, you will not do well in the course.
Test corrections policy
My goal is for you to know the basics of psychology in June, not just for a test. Therefore, in order to help the learning process I provide the opportunity for you to earn additional points after a major test. After the test has been handed back and gone over, you will have approximately 1 week to find time in your schedule to see me to do test corrections. The corrections are actually 10 additional AP multiple choice questions on the unit being studied. For each question answered correctly 1 additional point will be added to your test grade. Therefore, if you score a 75 on the test, do corrections and get 8 out of 10 right, your final test grade will be an 83.
One of the most effective ways to learn and retain material is through quizzing. Test corrections provide the opportunity for you to improve your grade and I am happy because you are do more practice with the material. However, I do expect you to be doing your part to be successful in class on a daily basis. Test corrections can be denied due to excess cell phone use during class, problematic class behavior, lack of academic integrity, etc...
