The purpose of the N5 History course is to provide learners with insights into their own lives and the society in which they live. By examining the past, learners will discover their heritage as members of their local community, country and wider world allowing for a greater sense of curiosity to develop and leading learners to actively engage and think critically about the world they presently live in.
There are three mandatory units:
1. Scottish History - The Era of the Great War, 1910-1928
In this unit you will examine the experiences of Scots in the Great War and evaluate the impact of War on life in Scotland.
2. British History - The Atlantic Slave Trade, 1770-1807
In this unit you will develop an understanding of the horrors of the triangular trade, evaluate the impact on African and Caribbean societies before exploring the Abolition Campaign and its success.
3. European and World History - Hitler and Nazi Germany, 1919-1939
We will examine the attempts to establish democracy in Weimar Germany, the reasons for its collapse before moving onto analysing the development and nature of the Nazi state.
The course assessment has two components.
1. Question paper (80 marks)
2. Assignment (20 marks)
