S1 LEARNERS MOVING TO S2

S2 is part of the Broad General Education (BGE) phase so students must continue to study each of the eight national curricular areas. Within this there will be some limited options for personalisation where you choose subjects within a curricular area/faculty but can't leave any of them. So for example, you will be able to choose between Chemistry with Physics or Chemistry with Biology but you won't be able to choose to drop Science. Likewise, you will be able to choose between Modern Studies, Geography or History but cannot drop Humanities. You therefore have less input than when you choose your subjects for S4, when you aren't required to take all curricular areas and your courses will lead on to qualifications.

Within the next few weeks, you will have the opportunity to complete options forms. Information and guidance will accompany the options forms.

I have a clear idea of my future career

If you have a clear idea of your future career you need to check what subjects you are required to study. Certain careers need you to have studied particular subjects in school or in college, and university courses. It is vital you gather as much information as possible before personalising your curriculum for S2.

I am not sure of my future career

It is not uncommon for pupils to have no definite career or further/higher education course in mind for when they leave school. If you feel this is you, keep open as many options as possible by choosing subjects to give you a broad curriculum.

In choosing subjects consider:

USEFUL SOURCES OF INFORMATION

It is important to make your decision based on all the information available to you, including the level you are working at within each subject. This should mean that you make an informed choice and select courses where you will perform well.
