The National 5 Art and Design course is practical and experiential. The key focus is creativity. It combines developing knowledge and understanding of artists and designers and their work, with practical learning experiences.
The course encourages learners to experiment with using art and design materials, be imaginative, creative, think critically, and apply practical skills in response to art and design activities. It will also develop learners’ understanding of artistic and cultural values, identities and ideas.
You will broaden and deepen your skills base, to increase your options regarding a range of vocations and careers, as well as develop attributes and capabilities of the four capacities. Throughout the course, you will develop creativity, perseverance, independence and resilience.
The National 5 course consists of two elements.
1. Expressive Activity
2. Design Activity
At National 5, the course assessment has three components: a theory exam and two portfolios which are sent to the SQA for external assessment.
