The course is suitable for students who have successfully achieved CfE Fourth level Maths or who have performed well in National 4 Maths/Applications of Maths. The course explores the applications of mathematical techniques and skills in everyday situations, including financial matters, statistics, and measurement. It aims to motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic. The mathematical skills within this course are underpinned by numeracy and designed to develop candidates’ mathematical reasoning skills in areas relevant to learning, life and work.
Managing Finance and Statistics
You will:
develop your reasoning and financial skills to manage finance and statistics in real-life situations
learn how to analyse financial positions, budget, and organise and present data to justify solutions and/or draw conclusions.
Geometry and Measures
You will:
develop your reasoning and geometric skills in real-life situations
learn how to analyse and use geometry and measures to identify and justify solutions to real-life problems.
Numeracy
You will:
develop your numerical and information-handling skills to solve real-life problems involving number, money, time and measurement
interpret graphical data and use your knowledge of probability to solve real-life problems involving money, time and measurement.
learn how to use your solutions to make and justify decisions
Assessment is by means of an exam. There are two papers, one of which is sat without the aid of a calculator. Achievement of this course gives automatic certification of the following Core Skill: Numeracy at SCQF 5.
Learners who perform well at National 5 Applications of Maths (grade A or B) may progress to Higher Applications of Maths.
