This course aims to provide learners with the basic knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism industry through simulated workplace settings, role play activities, case studies and planning and carrying out practical tasks. Learners will develop the skills to become effective job-seekers and employees; to deal effectively with all aspects of customer care and customer service; and to deal effectively with customer enquiries in relation to travel and tourism in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Worldwide.
The course consists of four units.
1. Employability
In this unit you will investigate the range of jobs available in the travel and tourism industry. You will gain experience writing CVs as well as taking part in mock interviews, reflecting on your skills and qualities in relation to a job in the travel and tourism industry. You will also gain experience working in a travel and tourism setting by taking part in a work-related practical activity.
2. Customer Service
In this unit, you will develop practical skills to enable you to interact effectively with customers and meet individual customer needs, including how to effectively handle customers’ complaints. You will also develop your communication skills as well as the skills required to promote products and services in the travel and tourism industry.
3. Scotland
In this unit, you will explore the role tourism plays in Scotland, investigating the positive and negative impacts as well as recent tourism trends. You will also research popular tourist destinations and attractions in Scotland and devise and promote a holiday package to meet the needs of a customer travelling to Scotland.
4. UK and Worldwide
In this unit, you will explore the role tourism plays in the UK and worldwide, investigating the positive and negative impacts as well as tourism trends. You will also research popular tourist destinations and attractions in the rest of the UK, Europe and long-haul destinations and devise and promote a holiday package to meet the needs of a customer planning a holiday.
There is no external exam for National 4 or National 5 Travel and Tourism. Instead, there is continuous assessment throughout the year which is marked internally on a Pass/Fail basis.
Learners must pass all of the four required units to pass the course.
