Medical, First Aid and Health

Day to Day Medical and Health

We have a number of first aiders in school who will deal with any accidents in the school or playground. We are limited to what we can use in school so cuts can only be cleaned with purified water. If we think that something requires more attention than we can give we will call you to assist. If your child suffers a head bump you will be informed with a phone call, told about the bump and how your child is reacting to it. We will advise if we think you need to come and assess your child, collect your child or seek other medical advice.  All accidents seen by a first aider will be reported to you in a brief form.  If, in the unlikely event, your child has a serious accident or suffers a seizure, for example, we will either take your child to Accident and Emergency ourselves, notifying you to meet us there or we will call for an ambulance.

If your child becomes unwell during school time we will phone you and ask you to take them home. Children pick up bugs very easily and we would advise you to keep your child off if they are not well. If you are keeping your child at home, please inform the school by phone or text before 9.00am.  If your child is suffering from any sickness or diarrhoea NHS guidance is that your child is kept off for a full 48 hours from their last episode before returning to school. We would request that this guidance is followed.

Changing of Children

When children become engrossed in what they are doing they can forget to head to the toilet in time and have an accident. Our staff will change your child as long as they are not too distressed. We have a small stock of spare clothes, however it is very helpful if you put a change of underwear and perhaps a spare skirt or pair of trousers in your child’s bag just in case.

If your child still requires to wear nappies or pull ups, they will be changed at regular intervals by our staff following our nappy changing policy.  You will be required to suply the school with nappies and wipes for your child, these will be used only for your child.

Ongoing Medical Conditions

If your child has a medical condition such as asthma, severe allergies or seizures, where they require medication to be kept in school a care plan will be drawn up in collaboration with you and any other professionals involved if necessary.  If staff training is required for the administration of medicines then this will be organised and a number of members of staff will be trained.

We want to ensure that we know everything about your child's medical conditions in order to keep them safe in school, so please do not hesitate to let us know if there are newly diagnosed conditions or changes to your child's ongoing condition.
