Rights Respecting
Rights Respecting Schools Award
In May 2022 we were awarded our Bronze: Rights Committed RRS Award.
We are now working towards our Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award. The award recognises the incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) into our school’s ethos, policies, planning and teaching practice. A rights-respecting school teaches the children about their rights and raises awareness of these alongside promoting rights-respecting relationships between all members of the school community.
There are 4 key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school which makes a positive impact on the whole of the school community.
Children are happier and healthier
Children have good relationships
Children are safe
Children are actively involved in the life of the school and the wider community
Examples of our Class Charters
Our Class Charters are created at the beginning of the year and reviewed each term. Each class chooses 3 rights that they think are the most important to respect in their classrooms. The class then decide the role of the Rights Holders (the children) and the Duty Bearers (the adults) in respecting these rights. Finally, the class choose a charter design and sign the charter.

Playground Charter
Our wellbeing warriors and RRSA pupil voice group collaborated to create a whole school playground charter. Every child in the school has signed the charter to ensure that everyones rights are being respected in the playground.
Right of the Month - November 2023
Each month we focus on a specific Article from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). We learn about the right through Health and Wellbeing and in Assembly.
Right of the Month October 2023
We considered how everyone is treated fairly and with respect in our school.
RRSA Pupil Voice Group
Our RRSA Pupil Voice group is formed of representatives from each class. The children aim to increase the awareness of children's rights around the school.
So far this year as a group we have explored:
Anti-Bullying Week
Kirkhill have joined the UNICEF OutRight Campaign and this is what most of the pupil voice groups work will be focussed around.
