The National 5 Applications of Maths course takes your everyday maths skills to a higher level.

The purpose of the National 5 Art and Design course is to provide a broad, investigative and practical experience of art and design. Creativity is the key focus.
You will develop knowledge of art and design practice by studying artists and designers and their work. You will also develop an understanding of expressive and design processes and accumulate and use a selection of related skills.
The course provides opportunities for you to be inspired and creatively challenged through your work.
In National Biology studying cell biology, you will learn more about the cell structure; transport across its membranes; DNA, the production of proteins and enzymes; genetic engineering and respiration.
You will investigate multicellular biology and discover how cells produce new cells, learn of the importance of control and communication in the body, how organisms reproduce and how they pass on their genes to their offspring. You will study how materials are transported and absorbed in plants and animals.
Extending your knowledge about life on Earth, you will look at different ecosystems and find out how organisms are distributed; photosynthesis; energy flow; food production and evolution.
The National Drama course encourages you to exercise imagination and creativity.
You will develop important skills, attitudes and attributes, including creativity and adaptability, learning independently and as part of a group, critical thinking, enthusiasm, and confidence. The course allows you to develop practical skills in creating, presenting and producing drama. It provides scope for personalisation and choice by encouraging you to be creative and to express themselves in different ways.

In the National 5 English course you will improve your reading, writing, talking, and listening skills. You’ll also cover the outcomes for the National 5 Literacy unit.
You will study different texts, like novels, poems, and plays, and learn how to analyse them. You will write critical essays and a portfolio of creative or discursive writing. You will develop your talk skills through group discussion and solo talk.

Environmental Science helps you understand how the environment works and how humans impact it.
You will learn about ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainability. The course covers Earth’s resources, energy, and waste management. You will also investigate the effects of pollution on weather and climate changes. Through experimental work and practical activities, you will develop your skills in scientific inquiry and data analysis. You will make informed decisions about environmental issues and identify ways of being responsible citizens. The course is divided into three main units:
Living Environment focuses on investigating ecosystems and biodiversity; interdependence and human influences on biodiversity. Earth’s Resources focuses on an overview of Earth systems and their interactions; the geosphere; the hydrosphere; the biosphere and the atmosphere. Sustainability includes an introduction to sustainability; food; water; energy; waste management.
With a strong interdisciplinary nature, this course is delivered jointly by the Science and Social Subjects Faculties. It aims to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in relevant areas of science and social science, to provide opportunities for you to develop scientific literacy skills and appreciate the impact environmental science makes on your lives, on the lives of others, on the environment, and on society.
The National 5 French course will enable you to learn to speak, write, read, and understand French with confidence.
You’ll build your language skills across a wide range of real-life topics like hobbies, school and holidays. You’ll also explore aspects of French culture, such as traditions and festivals.
It’s a great option for anyone looking to broaden their horizons and to develop great communication skills as well as the ability to exchange ideas with people from the French-speaking world. (It will also equip you with skills that make it easier to learn other languages too.)
In National 5 History you will explore key themes such as War, Industrialisation and Dictators.
You will be studying the First World War from Scotland’s perspective including the Western Front and the Home Front. You will also study the Industrial Revolution in Britain and the impact it had on all aspects of daily life. Finally, you will cover Hitler and Nazi Germany in which you will study the rise of the Nazis and how they created a totalitarian state.
You will develop key skills in analysing, evaluating and researching different sources which are key skills across all curriculums.

The National Music Technology course engages you through practical music-technology-based activities and tasks which are supported by knowledge and understanding of music technology and music concepts, form and structures.
The course enables you to develop your practical technical skills and creative use of music technology in a range of contexts such as a radio show, creating sound for a video game or foley for a short film. It includes opportunities for personalisation and choice in selecting varied contexts for learning.
The course encourages you to critically reflect on your learning and the quality of your work.
