Renewable Energy Information

Introduction

This is our written component. Here we have done lots of research and have found out the approximate amount of different energy sources used in each continent of the world. We have put this information in a pie chart. With the pie chart, we have also provided some information about the common source, and what they see as the sources strength. Hopefully this will help you decide whether you would like to join other people in the renewable energy movement. Disclaimer: we did not get any information from antarctica, but that is because most of what energy is used for is lab research and sources do not agree nor provide reasonable information about it.

What happens to the energy before we use it?

Probably all of you are curious. How does energy even get to us? Well, it's simple. First, energy is transferred from the source, which could be solar, fossil fuels, wind energy, or hydro power. Then, it is stored so that it can be transferred without leaking. Once it gets to your home, it is transferred to a device using a plug and wires.

Energy Usage by Continent

Europe

All Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, and Finland) use a lot of renewable energy, mainly Hydroelectricity. Which is electricity generated from the water current. Though the Netherlands are falling behind with the renewable energy flow. They have only about 6% of their energy renewable. France also happens to a have a huge nuclear energy preference, which means that France would like to use nuclear energy instead of fossil fuels and renewables. While Germany's renewable energy comes mostly from solar and wind energy. Though coal is still a big pillar for energy in Germany. Europe mainly uses oil. Though most countries there try to use renewable energy. Europe relies on all its energy sources, especially renewable energy.



Asia

Asia at the moment is doing great with renewable energy. At the moment 60% of Asia's energy is renewable. Asia's top 3 contributors to this 60% is India, China, and Japan. China let alone contributes to more than 1/2 of this 60%. Though all countries in Asia are gaining more renewable energy each day. Asia has enormous growth in the usage of renewable energy and many governments in Asia have recently focused on clean energy such as wind, solar, bioenergy, geothermal and hydropower. 16% of all the energy in Asia in solar energy. This is Asia's most commonly used source. Though this may become the second one since wind is at 14%. The reason why solar is such a good energy source is because Asia can afford solar farms. Meaning that lots of energy can be stored at once with multiple solar panels.

Africa

Africa is doing it's best to have lots of renewable energy. Though this energy is more expensive than burning these fossil fuels. Africa can't always afford renewables. Though all those countries there plan to get up on renewable energy. They plan on making Solar ice makers and water heaters. Basically all things that can be powered up with renewable energy source. Their plan is to also avoid power outages. Though at the moment Africa is in some trouble with getting renewable energy. Most of the energy that Africa needs is from coal. Africa values renewable energy as a global solution as well.

South America

South America is already very strong in renewable energy and it plans to grow stronger. In the recent years South America had an impressive growth in non-hydro renewable energy (renewable energy excluding hydropower). South America wants more potential with renewable energy. They are to do this by using hydro power with their former energy sources, solar and wind. Governments agree that solar and wind energy provide huge potentials, though hydro energy would provide stability. South America does mainly rely on renewables.

North America

This continent has a lot of innovations and it depends on renewable energy (mainly Hydropower). In Canada 63% of the energy used is Hydroelectricity. Some of the dams there are more than 100 years old. In the US, they make big projects like the hoover dam, in the colorado river. Also the US uses a lot of solar energy to. In Mexico , they use lots of hydro power, though it's environment is also suitable for wind and solar energy. This continent usually relies on renewable energy. Especially hydropower.

Oceania

Oceania as a continent mostly enjoy having renewable energy in their homes. They mainly use solar energy as their renewable energy source because the connection to the house is direct, and it can even store energy for a blackout. Though not all are for solar energy. Some people think it is inefficient and is not the way for renewable energy. Because on a hot day or night , people will use lots of air conditioning. This will use up all of the stored energy and the sun is not always up. These people don't think that solar energy is the worst, they just think since it helps the environment it is good, though they would definitely like a different way. Oceania also likes wind energy and hydro energy. People living in Oceania say that hydro and wind energy is much more efficient and reliable. Though many people don't use renewable energy at all.

Why is this like it is?

Perspectives can change energy use. If people view the environment as important and see energy use as affecting the environment, they will probably be more conscious about their usage of energy and will probably use a better source. If people don’t think that energy use has a significant effect on the environment, they probably won’t understand why we need to use cleaner energy and won’t change. It could also be some other cause, like cost. If the cost of cleaner energy sources drops, then people, especially those in poverty, will have a better chance of using it.

There can be many points of view. One point of view is that the environment is important and should be valued, cared for, and protected. Even if somebody thinks that, they may not always realize how much clean energy is affecting their environment. Another point of view could be that newer and cleaner energy sources are too expensive and are unreliable. Once the cost changes, that point of view could too. Points of view will change when they realize something about how energy affects the environment or something happens to make clean energy a better option.

So, why choose clean energy?

The picture above is showing the global carbon cycle. It shows that the ocean and forest both produce and reduce carbon dioxide. However, producing fossil fuel energy only produces carbon dioxide, so it cannot remain in balance. Cleaner energy sources, however, do not produce nor reduce carbon dioxide, so the worlds' amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide can remain in balance. The chart to the right shows that the pros outweigh the cons on this one.

We should use more renewable energy. When we don't use renewable energy, we cause pollution. This storyboard shows how using unclean energy pollutes and the impact that using clean energy will have on the environment. We think that all people should use clean energy and this is one of the reasons why.

Ways You Can Start Using Clean Energy

If you are renting your house, you can ask the person or company that owns your house to use a different energy source. If you own your house, you could get someone to install a different system of electricity.

A situation in which a planet (earth) is becoming warmer and could be good or bad.

Of, from, or related to water.

Pie Chart

A chart which represents slices of pie that is used to show how amounts compare to one another.

Renewable Energy

A source of energy which will never or not likely run out.
