Personal Flotation Devices

and

Life Jackets

>Not all Personal Flotation Devices(PFDs) are Life Jackets. Some PFDs are used for rescuing only.

>There are 5 types of PFDs. Maryland requires anyone under the age of 13 to wear a United States Coast Guard or USCG approved life jacket on their vessel.

>There also must be one PFD available for each person in the water craft or vessel regardless of age or ability to swim.

>Fit is important when picking out a life jacket. Check the stamp on the inside of the PFD for size, type, and USCG approval. Check your life jacket each season to make sure it is in excellent condition.

>Try to pick a color that makes you easily seen out on the water.
