Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms that permeate all classrooms can actually enable 'non-thinking' student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to facilitate rich mathematics, the Peter Liljedahl translated 15 years of research into 14 practices designed to move students from mimickers to thinkers.
