Differentiating Content: All students have the same goal or learning outcome. The teacher adjusts the degree of complexity to reach the goal, which can include scaffolding, tiering content, changing their presentation to provide a variety of media styles, or providing a variety of learning materials and manipulatives.
Example: "Team Sports Soccer 2-4" has an outcome that students need to demonstrate how to contact the ball to produce a topspin or backspin effect. Some students may be able to do that with no differentiation. However other students may need the process broken down into steps or a marker on the ball to show them where and how to make contact. Eventually those pieces can be removed to reach the outcome.
Differentiating Process: All students have the same learning outcome, but the instructional methods or learning activities vary depending on student need.
Example: Providing a graphic organizer for those students who need it to reach a learning outcome. For some students, different parts of the graphic organizer could be filled in already or sentence stems used in different areas.
Differentiating Product: Students have to show mastery of the same goal or learning outcome, but they can show mastery in a variety of ways.
Example: To assess the students' knowledge of the learning outcome, a choice board is given to determine mastery. The choice board is filled with a variety of tasks that are different in nature (kinesthetic, visual, auditory, analytical, procedural, etc.). The teacher can provide a certain number that the students need to complete. Need a template for choice boards? Click here.
