What is that thing?
It is a Pinzgauer. It is a true military vehicle which was once used by the Swiss Military - so it obviously saw a lot of action. It is made in Austria by a company called Styer-Puch. They started being built in the early 1970s. Until recently, they were still in production. They looked roughly the same the entire time.
I often get stopped by people for questions. That is fine. When I first acquired it, I was forewarned to allow an extra 5-10 minutes anywhere I went for questions.
On that note, here are the top five questions I get along with the respective answers:
Where did you get that thing?
I purchased it from a company which imported them into the United States.
How much did it cost?
They typically range in price from under $10k to $20k, but they can cost significantly more if customizations have been done.
Is it gas or diesel?
Gas. And, yes, the economy of it is not great, but not as bad as it could be. I average about 12 mpg. I do not drive it often.
Does it float? (This is truly a common question, by the way)
No, but it will manage well in relatively deep water. Mind you, fast water can push it just like any other vehicle so it definitely has its limits.
Do you take it off-road?
Yes, when I can. There are not many options in the immediate Austin area, unfortunately. When I do get out, though, it does well.
Is it street legal?
Absolutely. It is registered and inspected by the same standards as any other vehicle over 25 years old.
Is that a Unimog?
No. Close. A Unimog is another all terrain vehicle.
What are those things on the front? Do they hold a bazooka?
No. It is for an antenna. The antenna is the only thing that does not come with the vehicle when it is exported.
Does it have A/C?
No. The wind is my friend on hot days.
Is it fun to drive?
Yes, but tiring. It does not have power steering and there are many other little 'challenges' with it.
If you have other questions, I am happy to answer them.
