Simple past

If you want to write a verb in past, add -d or -ed at the end of the verb.

Visit --- visited

look --- looked

play --- played

IRREGULAR VERBS DON´T FOLLOW THIS RULE. SO, YOU HAVE TO STUDY THEM TO KNOW HOW TO FORM THE PAST. 

"TO BE" AND "CAN" ARE AUXILIARY VERBS AND THEY ARE IRREGULAR.

POSITIVE SENTENCES

Subject + Verb in past + Complement

(with auxiliary verbs)

You were very tall 

We could play football 

(with other verbs. Remember if the verb is regular or irregular)

They went to the cinema (ells van anar al cinema)

I ate an apple 

I visited my granny 

NEGATIVE SENTENCES

Subject + Aux. in past + not + Complement

(with auxiliary verbs)

You were very tall - - - - You were not very tall /you weren´t very tall

We could play football - - - - We could not play football /you couldn´t play football

(with other verbs) Use "DID" and put the verb in infinitive.

They went to the cinema - - - - They did not go to the cinema /They didn´t go to the cinema

I ate an apple - - - - I did not eat an apple / I didn´t eat an apple

I visited my granny - - - - I did not visit my granny /I didn´t visit my granny

QUESTIONS

Aux. in past + Subject + Verb (in infinitive) + Complement + ?

(with auxiliary verbs)

You were very tall - - - -  Were you very tall?

We could play football - - - - Could we play football?

*Remember to use DID at the beginning of the question if there isn´t any auxiliary verb. Then put the verb in infinitive.

(with other verbs)

They went to the cinema - - - -  Did they go to the cinema?

I ate an apple - - - - Did I eat an apple?

I visited my granny - - - - Did I visit my granny?
